Tips for Excavator Maintenance in High Temperatures

2024/12/30 11:26

Summer heat can be tough, not just for people but also for excavators! Here are some simple and practical maintenance tips to help you handle high-temperature construction tasks with ease.

1. Monitor the Impact of High Temperatures on the Hydraulic System

High temperatures can cause mechanical components to expand, leading to issues like valve jamming and reduced hydraulic system efficiency.

Solution

  • Regularly check the hydraulic oil level to ensure it is sufficient, and improve lubrication to minimize wear and tear.

2. Use the Right Lubricating Oil

Heat can thin lubricating oil, reducing its effectiveness and shortening component lifespan.

Recommendation

  • Choose high-temperature lubricating oil recommended by the manufacturer, based on the ambient temperature.

3. Maintain the Battery

High temperatures can accelerate the evaporation of electrolytes, potentially damaging the battery.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Regularly add distilled water or electrolyte to keep the liquid level 10–15mm above the top of the plates.

  • Ensure the electrolyte's specific gravity is around 1.25.

4. Keep the Machine Clean

Summer brings floating debris, insects, and dust that can accumulate on your excavator, affecting heat dissipation.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Remove debris from radiators and oil stains from the engine exterior promptly.

  • Clean air conditioner filters and condensers to maintain smooth airflow.

5. Use Coolant Properly

In high-temperature environments, coolant evaporates quickly, which can lead to a water tank shortage.

Operation Guide:

  • Check coolant levels daily before use and top up as needed.

  • If the water tank overheats, let the temperature drop before slowly adding cool water to avoid damage.

6. Prevent Engine Vapor Lock

High temperatures can make it difficult for the engine to dissipate heat, causing vapor lock and making the vehicle hard to start.

Countermeasures:

  • Stop the machine and allow it to cool before continuing operations.

7. Don’t Forget Your Own Heat Protection

While maintaining your equipment, take care of yourself too!

  • Alternate work and rest, stay hydrated, and protect yourself from the sun to avoid heatstroke.
